Castro County Information

Castro County is named after the consul general to France, Henri Castro. He immigrated from France to the United States in 1827 and later recruited hundreds of French families to emigrate to Texas from 1843 to 1847. Interestingly, neither Henri nor any of the French immigrants lived in this particular region. 

Castro County was created in 1876 and as of the latest consensus in 2010 the population was 8,062. The City of Dimmitt is the seat of the County.

Castro County is primarily an agricultural High Plains area of the Texas Panhandle. Farming is predominantly corn, wheat, sorghum, cotton, sugarbeets, and soybeans.

Castro County was the last Texas county to acquire a paved road which was completed as State Highway 86 in 1941 which connects the City of Dimmitt to Tulia, TX .
