Gillespie County is located in Central Texas on the Edwards Plateau. According to the latest poll in 2010 the population was 24,837. The county is a rectangular area covering approximately 1061 square miles. 

The county was first settled by Europeans in 1846. A group of approximately 120 Germans were led by John O Meusebach and settled in the Fredericksburg area. In 1847 the Texas legislature was petitioned to name the county “Pierdenales” or “Germania”. In 1848 the legislature formerly marked boundaries and named the county after Robert A Gillespie a hero of the Mexican War.

In 1851 John O Meusebach was elected to the Texas Senate. In 1854 the Texas State Convention of Germans adopted a political, social and religious platform that agreed on equal pay for equal work and the abolition of slavery.
