About Colorado County

Colorado County, Texas, is a working stretch of river bottom, coastal prairie and oak-shaded pasture along Interstate 10 between Houston and San Antonio. It belongs to the Gulf Coast-Brazos Bottom land-market region tracked by the Texas Real Estate Research Center at Texas A&M. Columbus, the county seat, sits on a horseshoe bend of the Colorado River about 65 miles west of Houston, and Eagle Lake and Weimar are the county's other incorporated towns. The county has about 960 square miles of land and counted 20,557 residents in the 2020 Census, so most of it is still farms, ranches, hay meadows and hunting country. It fits a buyer looking for a cattle place, a recreational tract with river or pond water, or a country homesite within a reasonable drive of Houston.

Living in Colorado County

The vibe

History runs deep here. The county was created in 1836 and organized in 1837, with Columbus as its seat. Texas Highways calls Columbus the state's oldest surveyed and platted Anglo-American town. Sam Houston's army camped on the east bank of the river at Columbus in March 1836, during the Runaway Scrape, and Beason's Park now marks the old ferry crossing. The 1890-91 courthouse still anchors downtown, and its original color scheme was restored in 2013. Eagle Lake grew up beside the small lake of the same name in the 1850s, and Weimar was founded after the railroad pushed west from Columbus in 1873. The county's first rice crop was planted near Eagle Lake in 1898.

The land changes from one side of the county to the other. Around Eagle Lake it's flat, open coastal prairie and farm ground, and the Attwater Prairie Chicken National Wildlife Refuge protects one of the largest pieces of native coastal prairie left in southeast Texas. The Colorado River runs through the middle of the county with sandy islands, wooded banks and pecan bottoms. Toward Weimar and the Fayette County line, listings show rolling, improved hay pasture, ponds and big mature oaks. Rural tracts on the market run from small homesites of a few acres to ranches of several hundred acres and more. In town you'll find older homes on shaded streets in Columbus, Eagle Lake and Weimar.

Life moves at a small-town, rural pace. People come downtown to shop the historic storefronts, paddle the river, watch birds on the prairie and work cattle or cut hay. The whole county is classed as rural, and county roads, farm-to-market roads and fence lines shape daily life more than traffic does. Still, I-10 and State Highway 71 put Houston, Austin and San Antonio within a day's errand.

Market snapshot

As of October 2026, the latest regional benchmark is the Texas Real Estate Research Center's second-quarter 2026 rural land figure for Region 5, which includes this county: $11,369 per acre, up 3.05 percent from a year earlier. The figure is a four-quarter moving median. It follows a year-end 2025 regional figure of $11,502 per acre, up 10.63 percent year over year. County asking prices run higher than the regional median, especially on smaller tracts. In October 2026, Land.com showed a median asking price of $24,833 per acre and a median list price of $755,250, with listings averaging about 82 acres. Other portals reported averages from about $15,955 per acre (LandBrokerMLS) to $28,338 per acre (LandSearch), depending on which listings they included. Those are asking prices, not closed sales. We couldn't find a reliable county figure for days on market for land.

The county's home market is small, and its numbers swing a lot from month to month. Orchard's 30-day county report, viewed in October 2026, showed a median sale price of $454,000 and $203.13 per square foot, but that came from just four sales. The same report showed a median of 156 days on market, about 100 homes for sale and price cuts on 75 percent of listings, which suggests buyers currently have room to negotiate. Redfin's county page put the median sale price per square foot at $170. Treat any single month as a rough read, not a trend.

Amenities

Three public school districts serve the county: Columbus ISD in and around the county seat, Rice Consolidated ISD with campuses in Eagle Lake, Garwood, Sheridan and Altair, and Weimar ISD on the west side. Buyers should check the Texas Education Agency for current ratings and confirm which district serves a specific tract. The Colorado River is the main outdoor draw. The 6.5-mile Columbus Paddling Trail loops around the town's horseshoe bend from the North River Bridge to Beason's Park and takes about two to five hours, depending on water conditions. The Colorado River RV Campground, about 6 miles northwest of Columbus, has cabins, trails through pecan groves and river fishing. About 7 miles northeast of Eagle Lake, the Attwater Prairie Chicken National Wildlife Refuge now covers more than 11,000 acres. More than 260 bird species have been recorded there, and it's one of the last places one of North America's most endangered birds still lives in the wild. Dining and shopping are small-town, centered on downtown Columbus, Weimar and Eagle Lake, with the bigger metro scenes a drive away.

Getting around is easy. Columbus sits at the junction of Interstate 10 and State Highway 71, about 65 miles west of Houston. Texas Highways estimates about an hour and a quarter to Houston, an hour and a half to Austin and two hours to San Antonio. Neighboring counties are Austin, Fayette, Lavaca, Jackson and Wharton.
